Watch those vids on Mr. Katz website. They where very informative. I already feel like I could do some basic stuff in it after just watching it once. He does a great job showing it.

Yeah I took his class at JLC years back in Portland - for whatever reason it is not intuitive for me.. However he is a great presenter, just blazed through the SU portion of his class. Good luck though - it is a useful tool and I have been trying to get my wife to learn it...

Greg from K/W wrote:I get that David. I need sketch up to do some drawings for the restaurant I am quoting. But perhaps I don't need them. They are letting me have pretty free reign on design. Ok excel first then sketch up no problem.
Greg, NEVER include drawings in a "quote", as there is nothing to "quote" without drawings. THEY should be giving you this, or paying a design fee, or at the very least be providing you with a generic picture of what they want.
On a project like this, I would give them the "free" ballpark estimate based on assumptions, if they pushed, other wise, $500 design fee to proceed to planning and proposal. Someone has to pay for your time drawing (and LEARNING) this all costs you money, why not them? NO BODY works for free.
If you want to be a nice guy, you can "credit" it if they decide to proceed
PS: Set some priorities and stick to them.

Smustard is another place to get very help add ins for sketchup
http://www.smustard.com/script/ProfileBuilder
Profile builder makes moldings very quick and very easy, there are also many Ruby scripts to make you work faster. I believe there is one for deck framing and regular framing, the components are framing lumber and they are placed as needed instead of drawing each one.
3 d Warehouse http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/
has many components and models to use. There are many companies that have collections for use in a drawing, like Kitchenaid
