OSHA to Step Up Job Site Safety Inspections

Postby Josh » Mon Sep 14, 2009

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) intends to increase its enforcement inspections, and home building and other construction job sites are a primary target, U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda L. Solis announced on Aug. 20 in response to a new Bureau of Labor Statistics report showing that fatal occupational injuries decreased to 5,071 in 2008, down from 5,657 in 2007.

Do you really think 9 out 100,000 full time construction workers die each year? I've only heard of one locally in my 12 years in the business.

Trust me I know it can happen. When your working out of a 90' boom lift on main street in downtown Louisville with lunatics driving by feet away honking horns you really think about it.

I think there have been about 5 or 6 here in the last 6 months, mostly getting flattened by dump trucks backing up. A few falling off roofs and 2 buried in ditches. But I don't have the total # of workers in the area so it may be low. 1 guy popped himself out of a bucket truck and landed on his head, he was pulling up fence posts with the bucket truck with him in the bucket, when the post came out the bucket shot up and he went out. The coworkers tried to hide what had happened, but it was caught on surveillance tape, he was doing so many things wrong. One of my customers who is a safety guy for a utility co. saw the tape, said the osha fine will be huge.

I never really hear of any incidents unless I look them up, but I know it happens a lot. Every once in a while when I look through the WorkSafeBC website (they're like WCB + OSHA), they have videos and news stories about incidents.

They post all of the incidents here, and also you can see which ones are fatal: http://www2.worksafebc.com/Publications ... 9161740137

We don't have so many accidents here.......the MoL is always around and they have been putting more effort into the residential market recently.

The government and the industry does put a lot of effort into education here, but there is not much you can do with idiots
The answer to the frequent question
"Do you give free estimates?"
Always is
"Nothing is free in this world"
