you really can't do much when the wire is in conduit like that, there is usually a thimble inbetween the meter pan and the breaker box so even if you get the screws out of the meter it ain't goin nowhere

Re: Siding around an Electric Pole
I don't think there is an issue, it is common here. I got alot of comments when I did that house. I think the only issues would be accessing the lb in the bottom. But seriously. When would you ever need to? I could see upgrading from an old 60amp service, or going from 100-200, but then I think you need a whole new mast anyways. I'll ask my brother and see if there is any code reference here. He is strictly industrial though.
I do agree the meter base would need to be accessible. Mine was round so it wasn't a problem.
They are fugly!
Josh, that one you posted, thats a horrible place for a meter!
I think doing a nice job on the stack and other similar details sets you apart. It is the most neglected part of a siding job I think (that is obvious to the client). Some of the j-trim messes I have seen.. wow!

That house was built way before electricity Scott. Some time in the late 1800's. You haven't done a siding job until you've done one of those beasts. Foundations up and down 3 inches etc.
I subbed that one out.

A good sparky will ask what is the wall cladding. Then leave you enough room to pass the cladding behind. You don't want to pry them....if the screws come loose and touch the contacts......you are catching pieces of the meter three streets over. Its the first thing Hydro looks for on a gro op

Re: Siding around an Electric Pole
There is no way to pass the cladding behind a box unless it's floating and there is no fastener's contacting the wall.
There's normally 4 bolts holding the meter box to the wall and two holding the conduit. A sparky thinks he can just hold it off an inch and I can make do. A sparky has no clue about moisture control and keeping water outside the wrb.
I'm talking about prying the entire thing off, not just loosening it to where I can hack my siding in behind.
I'll pry that box off in heartbeat and if I'm in a good mood i'll save the bolts for him so he can use them when he secure's the box after i'm done like he was supposed to.

Re: Siding around an Electric Pole
Most the time now in new construction they run it through the stud bay. I don't see how that's any different than on the outside?. The picture I posted I just ripped 2x4's down and nailed them to the wall and then capped it with a piece of plywood.
If they need to get to it again i'll I'd have to do is score the coil and remove it. Back my screws off the plywood and wola. THen it all goes back the same. 4 hours total for me and a roll of coil.
